Background
Hydropower accounts for around 60 percent of the electricity produced in Switzerland. It is reliable, climate-friendly and plays a key role in ensuring security of supply. Yet it is rarely in the spotlight: much of what makes it so fascinating and important remains largely unknown to the public.
As Switzerland’s largest energy producer, Axpo aims to give hydropower and its role as an employer in the regions greater public visibility. The focus is on technical excellence, the commitment of hydropower experts and its importance for the population.
Solution
The overall staging follows the central theme of «Stark». Over the course of several months, striking photographs of the hydropower plants operated by Axpo in Switzerland were created in collaboration with photographer Markus Bühler. Technical details and impressive natural landscapes were used to capture the fascination of hydropower. As part of the «Wasserwärts» exhibition, these works of art are presented in a spectacular setting and made accessible to a broad audience – in a truly exceptional location:
at an altitude of 1,860 metres, in the three-kilometre-long access tunnel leading to the Limmernboden reservoir. A place where the power of water can be clearly seen and felt. Farner developed the concept, storyline and naming, designed the exhibition and created its digital extension in the form of an online gallery. Interactive elements, a making-of feature and targeted PR activities combine technology, nature and emotion to create a unique experience.
Results
With «Wasserwärts», an immersive experience was created that moves visitors and makes the importance of hydropower tangible in a unique way – now for the second year running. Switzerland’s longest and highest-altitude photography gallery strengthens Axpo’s visibility in the local area around Limmern and brings its connection to the regions where it operates to life.
At the same time, it positions Axpo as Switzerland’s largest producer of hydropower and as a key contributor to security of supply. The making-of feature, PR activities and digital gallery complement the experience and provide additional touchpoints for interested audiences.
